ELIKYA
Elikya was born to Matata on June 28th, 1997 and is the mother of Teco. As the matriarch of our bonobo family, Elikya calls all of the shots. Elikya understands a number of spoken English words and is the first to respond to requests from caregivers. She is super gentle and playful with the youngsters - Teco and Clara - and she loves grooming with her brothers Kanzi, Maisha, and Nyota. Elikya can be quite sassy when she first meets you, but gaining Elikya’s trust is the most rewarding experience for our caregivers. She wins over the hearts of all of the bonobos and humans in her life. Elikya often requests home-grown green tomatoes from the Ape Initiative garden as she lounges in her favorite spot in the outdoor tunnels!
